New ancestor grasped at walking

Foot fossils unveil a species that lived near Lucy?s kind

Web edition : 2:28 pm

An ancient member of the human evolutionary family has put what?s left of a weird, gorillalike foot forward to show that upright walking evolved along different paths in East Africa.

A 3.4 million-year-old partial fossil foot unearthed in Ethiopia comes from a previously unknown hominid species that deftly climbed trees but walked clumsily, say anthropologist Yohannes Haile-Selassie of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and his colleagues. Their report appears in the March 29 Nature.

To the scientists? surprise, this creature lived at the same time and in the same region as Australopithecus afarensis, a hominid species best known for a partial skeleton dubbed Lucy. Another recent fossil discovery in Ethiopia suggests that Lucy?s kind walked much as people do today (SN: 7/17/10, p. 5).

?For the first time, we have evidence of another hominid lineage that lived at the same time as Lucy,? says anthropologist and study coauthor Bruce Latimer of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. ?This new find has a grasping big toe and no arch, suggesting [the species] couldn?t walk great distances and spent a lot of time in the trees.?

Lucy?s flat-footed compatriot adds to limited evidence that some hominids retained feet designed for adept tree climbing several million years after the origin of an upright gait, writes Harvard University anthropologist Daniel Lieberman in a comment published in the same issue of Nature.

Armed with only eight toe bones, Haile-Selassie?s team doesn?t have enough skeletal evidence to assign a species name to the new find. But this mysterious hominid?s foot shares more in common with 4.4 million-year-old Ardipithecus ramidus, largely known from a partial skeleton nicknamed Ardi (SN: 1/16/10, p. 22), than with Lucy?s crowd.

Ardipithecus evolved into an initial Australopithecus species by 4.1 million years ago, paving the way for Lucy and her kin (SN: 4/15/06, p. 227). Haile-Selassie?s discovery may come from a hardy Ardipithecus lineage that managed to survive near A. afarensis for hundreds of thousands of years before dying out, comments anthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University in Ohio.

As in gorillas, Ardi and the newly discovered hominid possessed short, curving big toes capable of grasping against the second toe. Other toe bones from Ardi and the new discovery formed joints that enabled a two-legged stride.

The newly found fossils include an unusually long bone from the fourth toe that unexpectedly resembles corresponding toe bones of monkeys. No such fourth-toe bones have been found for Ardi?s and Lucy?s species.

An Ardipithecus species might have lived alongside A. afarensis in East Africa, but the evolutionary identity of the new foot fossils can?t be determined, remarks anthropologist Tim White of the University of California, Berkeley, who led excavations and analyses of Ardi?s remains.

?Haile-Selassie?s discovery highlights our lack of knowledge about hominid feet,? White says.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek police recovered an ancient statue that was illegally excavated and hidden in a goat pen near Athens, and arrested the goat herder and another man who were allegedly trying to sell the work for ?500,000 ($667,000).

The marble statue of a young woman dates to about 520 B.C. and belongs to the kore type, a police statement said Wednesday. Police photos showed the 1.2-meter (4-foot) work to be largely intact, lacking the left forearm and plinth.

Although dozens of examples of the kore statue and its male equivalent, the kouros, are displayed in Greek and foreign museums, the type is considered very important in the development and understanding of Greek art. New discoveries in good condition are uncommon.

Archaeologists who inspected the find estimated its market value at ?12 million ($16 million), a police official said.

"They told us that this is a unique piece," the official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to the speak to the media since the investigation is still ongoing.

Still bearing traces of soil, the statue has the hint of a smile on its lips, elaborately braided hair and an ankle-length gown.

Police said it had been concealed in a goat pen near the village of Fyli, in the foothills of Mount Parnitha on the northwestern fringes of Athens. The 40-year-old goat herder and another Greek man aged 56 were arrested.

Detectives are seeking to determine where the statue was excavated, which could potentially lead archaeologists to a previously unknown 6th century B.C. sanctuary or cemetery.

The archaeological remains of civilizations stretching back thousands of years are spread all over Greece. By law, all antiquities are state property. But pillaging is a highly lucrative business.

The police official said the suspects arrested Tuesday had put out feelers to potential buyers in Greece, and "would have sold it for a relative pittance, ?500,000, given its market value."

In another major success two years ago, police in southern Greece recovered a pair of twin kouros statues, and arrested two suspected looters.

Dozens of illegally exported finds have been returned to Greece over the past few years, including masterpieces from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

An Overview of XSAT Satellite ... - Broadband Internet Access Guide

XSAT stands for Exceptional Satellite and is technology that is used to produce mobile satellite telecommunications. This form of satellite communications is designed to support data and voice in the mobile environment for a variety of uses in locations on land, in maritime vessels, and in the aviation industry.

XSAT utilizes a variety of devices that make up a mobile satellite telecommunications system.? Some of the devices include satellite modems, antennas, receivers, satellite mobile phones, and other devices which are activated through dedicated bandwidth lines to deliver voice and data communications via a high speed broadband satellite connection.

If you are unfamiliar with XSAT mobile satellite telecommunications the following information will provide you with an overview of how XSAT technology is applied to different types of global communications on land, at sea, and in the air.

XSAT and Mobile Satellite Land Communications

XSAT technology is typically applied to locations where people are working remotely or in the field.? These types of locations have little to no means for connectivity and include remote areas where people work in mining, oil drilling, utility services, and other types of industries.? XSAT services for remote locations on land commonly include three categories which include mobile satellite broadband connectivity, device-to-device communications, and voice/data communications.

• Mobile Satellite Broadband:? Broadband connectivity is delivered to field offices and remote locations via mobile satellite which is capable of delivering both standard? and streaming Internet Protocol (IP), voice communications via mobile satellite phone, ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) which carries voice and Internet, and SMS messaging.

• Device-to-Device:? XSAT technology makes it possible to establish communications between devices for the purpose of monitoring operations in the field or other remote land location.? This type of connection is achieved using low volume combined with high frequency bursts to allow efficient data streaming? for both fixed and mobile assets via device-to-device communications.

• Voice and Data Communications:? XSAT provides global communications using mobile satellite telephony that remote workers use for SMS, email messaging and communications using a handset designed for voice communications activated by a mobile satellite system.

Mobile satellite telecommunications allow businesses in many different sectors to access mission critical applications regardless of the land location.? This also includes transportation services, medical emergency, and disaster relief services.

XSAT and Maritime Communications

XSAT technology is used for a broad range of maritime communications to provide high speed broadband connections regardless of your location at sea.? The services typically include always-on broadband and data communications, voice and fax, and mobile satellite telephony from vessel to vessel or from vessel to land.

• Maritime Broadband:? High speed broadband connectivity delivered via XSAT technology to sea vessels uses mobile satellite connectivity together with compact maritime antennas.? This type of system allows for faster email and data communications as well as voice communication delivered via VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).? Depending upon the configuration it is also possible to establish a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to facilitate secure communications for workers at sea.

• Voice, Fax, and Data:? XSAT technology is also used to support critical sea vessel applications such as weather and chart data, faxing, crew communications, and vessel tracking which is delivered over a high speed mobile broadband satellite system.? This allows crew members to send data and make phone calls in addition to using distress communications and other safety applications that are necessary at sea.

• Mobile Satellite Telephony:? The use of XSAT allows for mobile satellite telephony systems which are specifically designed for maritime conditions.? The global satellite phones are cost effective and capable of communications below deck without disruption and receive a high speed connection for sending SMS and short email messages.? Depending upon handset design it can also function as a handheld satellite terminal for backup and emergency use.

Mobile satellite connectivity for maritime is used by government organizations, military, fishermen, and leisure activities at sea and provides a low-cost but high quality communications system for critical maritime applications.

XSAT and Aviation Industry Communications

Global connectivity in the air is a critical part of aviation safety in terms of weather conditions, safety communications, data and voice transmission, and flight plan updates, to name a few considerations.? XSAT technology can help to deliver essential high speed broadband connectivity, quality and secure voice communications, and various safety and aeronautical services.

• Broadband Connectivity:? In the aviation industry many of the critical applications can be very demanding in terms of bandwidth and data transmission.? XSAT technology is capable of increasing data rates and other Internet Protocol services such as data and video streaming that require extremely fast connections.? In addition to mobile satellite broadband, the rates of transmission are further increased through the use of additional channels for data and via data compression.? It also supports all critical cockpit programs which include mobile telephony, access to Virtual Private Networks (VPN), weather updates, flight plans, and messaging applications such as email and SMS.

• Voice Communications:? XSAT technology also supports voice communications by delivering high quality and cost effective mobile satellite networks with high gain antennas to ensure reliable connectivity. ?In terms of security the mobile satellite telecommunications systems for aviation contain military grade encryption to protect confidential communications taking place with mobile telephony.

• Aeronautical and Safety Communications:? This type of aviation communications is a critical part of operations in the air for public airlines, government aircrafts, coastguard vessels and military defense agencies.? The communication technology which is driven by XSAT technology can be delivered in a wide variety of forms to support routine services as well as critical services such as distress reporting, air traffic control, air surveillance, pilot datalink communications, and other mission critical applications.

These are just a few of the ways that XSAT technology is applied to different industries.? Many of the providers of mobile satellite telecommunications equipment have been at the forefront of the industry and partner with other companies to develop new markets.? XSAT providers also continually work with developers to continually improve mobile satellite telecommunications by offering solutions which serve industries that require reliable and secure communications in remote locations where access is limited or non-existent.

Oil prices fall as supplies grow

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oil prices dropped 2 percent Wednesday amid indications that Western nations may be considering a release of oil reserves onto the world market. In the U.S., the supply of oil is already ample, and growing.

Benchmark U.S. crude fell $2.27 to $105.07 per barrel in New York while Brent crude lost $1.67 to $123.87 per barrel in London.

Prices tend to fall as supplies go up. U.S. supplies surged last week by twice the amount that analysts were expecting, according to government data released Wednesday. And French officials said the U.S. and Europe are thinking of supplying markets with more oil from emergency reserves in hopes of pushing prices even lower.

The tactic briefly worked last summer. At the time, the concern was the loss of Libyan oil, then about 2 percent of global output. This time, policy makers are concerned that a prolonged standoff with Iran could disrupt supplies.

Western nations fear that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon, and they've been putting pressure on the oil-rich nation to open its facilities to inspection. Iran denies the claim, though it has turned away international inspectors who could confirm it.

As both sides dig in, Japan and the European Union have cut back on imports of Iranian oil. An international banking service company has also made it more difficult for Iran to sell oil to other countries. Iran is the world's third-largest oil exporter, and the potential loss of its oil on the market has driven oil prices about $15 per barrel higher than they otherwise would be, analysts said.

On Wednesday, France's government said it is considering a release of emergency stockpiles as part of a U.S.-led effort to cool off the rise in oil prices. Government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse said France is waiting for recommendations from the International Energy Agency before tapping its reserves.

In Germany, a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said the government had received no official request to release its reserves. "If there were concrete proposals or requests, we would examine them," Steffen Seibert told reporters.

The rise in oil has driven up U.S. gasoline prices by 19 percent this year. The national average climbed Wednesday, adding more than a penny to $3.911 per gallon, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Experts say gasoline could rise as high as $4.25 per gallon this year, breaking the record of $4.11 per gallon set in 2008.

In other energy trading, heating oil lost 1.97 cents to $3.1989 per gallon and gasoline futures fell by 3.59 cents to $3.3697 per gallon. Natural gas futures gave up 3.8 cents to $2.17 per 1,000 cubic feet, close to a 10-year low.
