Diabetes is a serious condition. It is a chronic disorder of carbohydrates, fat and protein metabolism, characterized by fasting elevation of blood sugar level and a greatly increased risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and loss of nerve functions.
There are two major types of diabetes. Type I and Type II.
Type I is also known as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) and often occurs in children and adolescents. Individuals with Type I diabetes need to inject insulin everyday. It occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin (a hormone which helps deliver sugar from the blood to the body?s cells).
Type II is also known as Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) and is usually an adult disease. In type II diabetes, insulin is present but not appropriately available due to insulin-resistance. For a variety of physiological reasons, the hormone (insulin) is unable to do its job. The pancreas produces insulin but the body?s cells do not respond to its action and can?t absorb the glucose from the blood so glucose levels rise in the blood.
There are a number of causes which give rise to diabetes. Some of the causes are listed below; however, they should not be considered a complete list.
Heredity plays a major?role. Some individuals or ethnic groups?may be?genetically susceptible than others.
Experts are convinced that obesity and a sedentary lifestyle also play a major role in the development of diabetes.
Impaired digestion and an overworked pancreas.
Syndrome-X (results from a combination of disorders such as hypertension, high cholesterol, blood clotting abnormalities and insulin resistance)
Chromium deficiency.
Prenatal factors. Recent evidence supports the concept that the nutritional status of the mother during pregnancy plays a role in determining whether the child will develop diabetes later in life.
Food with refined sugars and high glycemic index.
Imbalance between two critical hormones- insulin and glucagon.
Misplaced T7 (thoracic 7) vertebra.
Complications resulting from diabetes can be grave if not controlled.
Some complications include but are not limited to:
Hypoglycemia and diabetic coma.

There are some early warning signs you should be aware of if you suspect development of diabetes such as

Proper treatment is often delayed because diabetes is not diagnosed until a patient is already experiencing complications.
Diet is an extremely important part of diabetic therapy. Nutrition is the cornerstone for good health. A couple of diet considerations after consultation with your physician could include complex carbohydrates that are rich in fiber, fresh vegetables and fruits of low glycemic index, rather than simple carbohydrates such as breads and pastries.

Chris Brown's Mom: PISSED at Him Over Twitter Rant!
Chris Brown's mother, Joyce Hawkins, is reportedly livid about his post-Grammy Twitter rampage in which he told his haters to f--k off ... among other things.
The singer lashed out at critics who slammed the Grammys for honoring him during Sunday's awards show, and had bitter words for those bashing him.
"HATE ALL U WANT BECUZ I GOT A GRAMMY Now! That's the ultimate F**K OFF!" The tweets from Brown's account said at the height of the rampage.
The Tweets have since been removed, and Brown is in damage control mode, with his camp saying he didn't even post that. Mom? Not buying it.

A Brown source says: "Chris didn't Tweet that, someone does his postings to Twitter and when he saw that he ordered it taken down immediately."
However, “Joyce is absolutely livid that those vile words and rants were posted on Chris' Twitter page. She isn't buying his excuse that he didn't post it."
"She has told him repeatedly that it is his Twitter, only he should be posting to it, period. She feels like people were just waiting for a negative reaction."
"She had begged Chris to just ignore it and now that he didn't listen, she is just beside herself that after such successful performance at the Grammys and winning the award, people are now talking about this Twitter controversy."
"It's time for Chris to grow up, and his mother told him that. Chris is his own worst enemy and she constantly worries about how he reacts to stress."
The Chris Brown Twitter tirade also included this missive:
"Strange how we pick and choose who to hate! Let me ask u this. Our society is full of rappers (which I listen to) who have sold drugs (poisoning)."

Brown’s Twitter page looks much different today, and now only has 11 posts total, with most of the past year's activity deleted. His most recent Tweet:

Young goats can develop distinct accents
Young goats learn new and distinctive bleating "accents" once they begin to socialise with other kids.
The discovery is a surprise because the sounds most mammals make were thought to be too primitive to allow subtle variations to emerge or be learned. The only known exceptions are humans, bats and cetaceans
? although many birds, including songbirds
, parrots and hummingbirds have legendary song-learning or mimicry abilities.
Now, goats have joined the club. "It's the first ungulate to show evidence of this," says Alan McElligott of Queen Mary, University of London.
McElligott and his colleague, Elodie Briefer, made the discovery using 23 newborn kids. To reduce the effect of genetics, all were born to the same father, but from several mothers, so the kids were a mixture of full siblings plus their half-brothers and sisters.
The researchers allowed the kids to stay close to their mothers, and recorded their bleats at the age of 1 week. Then, the 23 kids were split randomly into four separate "gangs" ranging from five to seven animals. When all the kids reached 5 weeks, their bleats were recorded again. "We had about 10 to 15 calls per kid to analyse," says McElligott.
Some of the calls are clearly different to the human ear, but the full analysis picked out more subtle variations, based on 23 acoustic parameters. What emerged was that each kid gang had developed its own distinctive patois. "It probably helps with group cohesion," says McElligott.
"People presumed this didn't exist in most mammals, but hopefully now, they'll check it out in others," says McElligott. "It wouldn't surprise me if it's found in other ungulates and mammals."
Erich Jarvis of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, says the results fit with an idea he has developed with colleague Gustavo Arriaga, arguing that vocal learning is a feature of many species.
"I would call this an example of limited vocal learning," says Jarvis. "It involves small modifications to innately specified learning, as opposed to complex vocal learning which would involve imitation of entirely novel sounds."

A Closer Look At Periodontitis | New Health and Fitness
Causes: Periodontitis can arise for a variety of reasons. A severe deficiency of vitamin C can lead to scurvy and result in bleeding, spongy gums, and eventual tooth loss. One kind of uncommon but highly destructive periodontal disease, juvenile periodontitis, is found to have a strong genetic basis. Meanwhile, the common periodontal disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis is due to the build-up of dental plaque.
Our mouth is composed of natural bacteria that have the ability to thrive on food particles that were not thoroughly eradicated from haphazard brushing enabling them to form into a plaque which is a combination of bacteria and sticky particles that forms on the teeth and along the gum line. This newly formed and small amount of plaque is not visible to human eye and relatively harmless, however if this is left to accumulate, it will not only become unsightly but it will seriously harmful to dental health.
A research was done in the early 1960s to demonstrate the role played by plaque in the development of periodontal disease. Dental researchers had some people stop brushing their teeth and let plaques build up just for the purpose of the study. Within 2 to 3 weeks, signs of inflammation such as redness, swelling and increased tendency to bleed appeared. When brushing resumed, the inflammation went away.
Symptoms: Most people do not experience any pain due to gum disease and so it often goes unnoticed. One may have gum disease that has spread into the bone and not have any symptoms. With this, it is important to have regular dental visits to check yourself for the warning signs of gum disease which include: bleeding gums during brushing; red, swollen or tender gums; persistent bad breath; loose or separating teeth; pus between the teeth; a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite; and gums that have pulled away from the teeth.
Now, once you have experience any of the above mentioned symptoms, it is suggested to see your dentist for proper periodontal disease treatment to prevent it from getting worse.
However, it is inevitable that people who are suffering from any dental problems may not experience the risk of having gingivitis. Say for instance, gingivitis has the tendency to develop into periodontitis if left untreated. On the other hand, the plaque above or along the gum line is referred to as supragingival plaque. If this isn?t removed in timely manner, it can become covered by swollen gum tissue or may spread below the gum line and further become subgingival plaque. In such environment, harmful bacteria within the plaque proliferate and injure surrounding tissues through the direct secretion of toxins. This may cause the greatest damage through stimulating a chronic inflammatory response and thus results to breaking down of periodontal ligament and bone of the tooth socket.
Bone destruction from periodontitis can either result to receding gum lines or cause deep crevices between an individual tooth and its socket. The crevices are called periodontal pockets which inevitably deepen and eventually become deep enough to jeopardize the support socket of the adjacent tooth.

Self hypnosis is basically a meditation or relaxation technique. Many people all over the globe have benefited from it. Many report they started feeling a boost in their confidence and productivity after trying it. Some also report that they got rid of many ?body aches? after practicing self hypnosis. Psychologists recommend self hypnosis but there are some potential warnings that you should consider before going for it.
Do not think it can address all the issues in your life. Self hypnosis is not a miracle. When you have too many problems or complications in your life try consulting a therapist and leave the self hypnosis as a relaxation technique only.

Disturbances or coming out abruptly can cause an increase in the blood pressure or faster heart beat. Also, after coming out of the state, do not attempt to do anything for 10 minutes. Give yourself sometime to alert the body completely.
Just take care of these things and you will be able to use self hypnosis to your full advantage.

China's CIC brushes aside Merkel investment plea (Reuters)
BEIJING (Reuters) ? The head of China's $410 billion sovereign wealth fund CIC brushed aside a call by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to buy European government debt, saying such investments were "difficult" for long-term investors.
In comments ahead of a China-EU summit starting on Tuesday, Lou Jiwei, chairman of China Investment Corp (CIC), said any fresh injection of funds into Europe would be in industrial and other real assets, not government bonds.
His comments struck a sharper tone than a commentary in the Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily, which sought to reassure the European Union that China had no intention to "buy up Europe."
Speaking at a forum in Beijing, Lou said Merkel had asked CIC and other long-term investors to buy European government debt when she visited Beijing earlier this month.
"For European bonds like the government bonds of Italy and Spain, only central banks with certain responsibilities can invest," he said.
"But it's more difficult for long-term investors like us to make (such) investments," he told the annual meeting of China Economists 50 Forum, a club of government officials and economists.
"Investment opportunities may lie in areas like infrastructure and industrial projects, and these projects can help economic recovery," he said.
A central bank adviser echoed Lou's harder line on buying European government debt.
"We may be poor, but we aren't stupid," Xia Bin told reporters on the sideline of the forum. "We must follow commercial principles in making such investments. That means we want returns."
Lou, who predicted Europe will "inevitably" fall into recession, said Merkel had asked CIC to buy European government debt, including that of France and Germany.
Reflecting Lou's comments on infrastructure, CIC recently bought a minority stake in London water supplier Thames Water.
During a visit by Merkel to China this month, Premier Wen Jiabao had said Beijing was considering increasing its participation in rescue funds set up by the European Union to help ease the debt crisis, although he didn't make any explicit commitments.
Pointing to the tone that China is more likely to adopt at its summit with senior EU officials on Tuesday, the People's Daily said in a front page commentary that the interests of the world's second-biggest economy lay in selflessly helping Europe.
"China has no appetite or ability to 'buy up Europe' or 'control Europe' as some European commentators have said," wrote Feng Zhongping, director of the Institute of European Studies at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.
"China has from the beginning strongly supported the EU and the euro, in clear contrast to the 'talking down' of Europe in the international community," Feng wrote in the piece, carried in the paper's overseas edition.
RECESSION SEEN IN EUROPE
With more than $3 trillion in foreign exchange reserves -- dwarfing those of other countries -- China is seen as having the financial firepower to help ease Europe's debt crisis.
Chinese leaders have repeatedly expressed confidence Europe will handle the crisis, while refraining from making firm financial commitments of support.
Instead, Beijing has urged Europe first to take further steps on its own, a position reiterated on Monday by Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin.
"We have always supported the proactive measures the EU has taken to deal with the euro debt crisis. We believe that aside from taking some emergency relief steps, the EU should continue taking fiscal and financial structural and fundamental reforms to give a clearer signal to the international community," Liu told reporters.
"Heavily indebted countries should, according to their national condition, adopt appropriate fiscal policies. The international community should continue to pro-actively support the EU's efforts to deal with the crisis."
The EU-China summit, postponed from December, will bring together Wen and President Hu Jintao with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.
The European Stability Mechanism, a 500-billion-euro ($665 billion) permanent bailout fund due to become operational in July, is expected to replace the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), a temporary fund that has been used to bail out Ireland and Portugal and will help in the second Greek package.
The euro zone must agree to and approve a 130-billion-euro ($170 billion) bailout package for Greece before Wednesday to allow time for complex legal procedures involved in a bond swap to be completed in time for a March 20 bond redemption.
Failure to strike a deal risks pushing Athens into a debt default that could threaten its future in the euro zone and worsen the crisis.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Nikola Pekovic had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Beasley added 17 points and 14 boards to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to an 86-84 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night in their first game without the suspended Kevin Love.
Ricky Rubio had 14 assists and five steals and Derrick Williams scored seven of his 14 points in the final four minutes to give the Timberwolves their third straight win.
DeMarcus Cousins had 10 points and 11 rebounds while battling foul trouble for most of the game. Jimmer Fredette scored all 13 of his points in the final period. But Tyreke Evans and Cousins combined to shoot just 8 for 26 to snap their three-game winning streak.
The Kings had a frenetic shot to win their fourth straight game in the final seconds, but Donte Green's 3-pointer from the corner missed at the buzzer.
Evans finished with 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting, while Thornton scored 21 of his 22 points in the first three quarters.
The Kings trailed 69-60 to start the fourth, and coach Keith Smart left his starting backcourt of Thornton and Evans on the bench and put his trust in Fredette.
It's been a difficult rookie season for the heralded 10th overall pick out of BYU. He's had difficulty keeping up with the quickness at the NBA level and finding his shot. After clanking his first two attempts of the game Tuesday night, Fredette found his range.
He buried three 3-pointers, scored off a steal and fed Green for a dunk that got Sacramento back in it.
Green's 3-pointer tied it at 82 with 1:09 to go, but Williams came back with a big 3-pointer in the corner to give the Wolves just enough.
While the rest of his Wolves teammates were struggling from the field in the third quarter, missing 13 of the 16 shots they took, Pekovic was a force. He made all six of his shots, three of them coming on dunks. One came on a between-the-legs feed from Rubio and another on a pretty spin to the baseline past Cousins.
The second-year man from Montenegro also lowered his shoulder and ran right over Cousins for a layup, and picked Jason Thompson at halfcourt and finished the play with a nifty finger roll to bring the crowd to its feet.
Love was suspended Monday for stepping on Rockets forward Luis Scola last Saturday. That meant the Timberwolves were missing his 25 points, 13.7 rebounds and NBA-leading 39.4 minutes for the game against the Kings and on Wednesday night at Memphis.
Williams got the start, getting an opportunity for extended playing time that has been increasingly rare for the No. 2 overall pick. He played 37 combined minutes the previous four games combined, stuck behind Love and a healthy Michael Beasley in the Minnesota frontcourt.
Notes: Love also will sit out Wednesday night's game at Memphis. ... Cousins picked up two fouls in the first four minutes and his fourth with 2:26 to go in the third. ... The Kings turned it over 19 times. ... Timberwolves C Darko Milicic missed the game with a sprained right ankle suffered in practice Monday.

Verizon-Redbox deal adds to online video choices (AP)
A new Internet streaming venture built around Redbox's DVD-rental kiosks adds to a crowded field of online video-viewing services dominated by Netflix.
In announcing the new venture Monday, Verizon Communications Inc. and Redbox's parent company, Coinstar Inc., did not say what types of content will be available or how much the service will cost when it starts in the second half of this year.
But executives did say the service will bundle streaming and DVDs, which Redbox currently rents through its ubiquitous red kiosks in supermarkets, drug stores and other places around the U.S.
It's likely that any plan from the new, still-unnamed venture will be cheaper than the minimum $16 a month that Netflix customers now pay to get both DVDs and online streaming access to a vast trove of movies, TV show episodes and original programming. It's also likely that the new venture won't have as extensive a selection as Netflix now does.
Companies such as Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., as well as cable companies and TV stations themselves, already offer a variety of ways to catch TV show episodes and movies using Internet-connected devices.
Here are details on some of them:
? Amazon's Instant Video
Amazon's service offers thousands of movies and TV show episodes for online rental. Rental prices are generally $1 to $5. There is no monthly subscription plan, so this option is best if you're looking for an a la carte plan that lets you pick what you want to watch.
Amazon offers free streaming of some of its content to members of its $79-per-year Prime program, which also offers free two-day shipping and discounts on next-day shipping.

GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) ? Three mushroom pickers lost six nights in the rugged forest of southwest Oregon with no food considered eating their dog, and used the screen on their dead cellphone and the blade of a sheath knife to flash a signal at the helicopter pilot who found them.
Dan Conne said Sunday from his hospital bed in Gold Beach that he and his wife and son spent the nights huddled in a hollow log with nothing to eat, and considered sacrificing their pit bull, Jesse, for food.
"She's that good a dog, she'd have done it, too," Conne said.
A volunteer helicopter pilot looking outside the search area Saturday spotted Dan and Belinda Conne, both 47, along with 25-year-old Michael, on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. They were about 10 miles northeast of the town of Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.
"The wife had the Blackberry and I had the knife," Dan Conne told The Associated Press. "I kept flashing. The wife said, 'You're blinding them.' But I wanted to make sure they seen us. I wasn't taking no chance."
The three had given up hope and thought they were going to die when rescuers came.
"None of us thought we were coming out of there," he said.
While lost, the cold and hungry family could see search helicopters and airplanes flying low and slow overhead, but they couldn't get the pilots' attention through the thick, coastal forest vegetation.
When they were found, the Connes were just five football fields from a road, and a mile from their Jeep.
The three were airlifted to a Gold Beach hospital, where they stayed overnight.
Dan Conne hurt his back, and Belinda Conne had hypothermia, Curry County Sheriff John Bishop said. All three were hungry, and enjoyed their potato soup and sandwiches at the hospital.
Belinda and Dan Conne were discharged Sunday. Their son, who suffered frostbite, hypothermia and a sprained ankle, remained in the hospital for more treatment.
The family was spotted by Jackson County Commissioner John Rachor, spending his first day searching for them in his own helicopter with Curry County Sheriff's Lt. John Ward.
Rachor had been up two hours and decided to go outside the search area, heading uphill from where the family parked their Jeep, instead of down.
"We couldn't find anything in the obvious places, so we decide to go to the not-obvious places," he said. "I kind of think outside the box on these things sometimes, and it pays off."
Rachor is the same pilot who found a San Francisco family lost in a snowstorm in 2006 just 35 miles from where he found the Connes. In 2006, Rachor flew Kati Kim and her two young daughters to safety after spotting them near their car. James Kim died of hypothermia trying to hike out for help.
On Saturday, Rachor saw a movement on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. A man in tan bib overalls was waving his arms. Ward marked the spot on his GPS and called the Coast Guard for a helicopter to winch the family out. He also called a nearby ground team to give them immediate aid, then flew back to Gold Beach for fuel.
"The searchers were with us within 20 minutes of the first copter that found us," Dan Conne said. "There must have been nine or 10 of them. They just kept coming out of that brush. lt was just a real happy feeling, 'cause we knew we wasn't going to die out there."
The Coast Guard lifted Michael and Dan Conne out first, then returned for Belinda. The dog walked out with searchers.
Dan Conne said the three got lost Sunday after going back for a second load of hedgehog and black trumpet mushrooms, which they sell to a local buyer. It was Belinda's day off from her motel maid job.
They left their four Chihuahua dogs at the fifth-wheel trailer at the campground where they live, and drove to first one spot, then returned for peanut butter sandwiches and went to a new spot they were not familiar with.
In the heat of the afternoon, they left their jackets at the end of a gravel road. Their last meal was a peanut butter sandwich each on Sunday.
When they didn't come home the first night, the camp host alerted authorities. Searchers hit the ground Monday. Wednesday, searchers found the Connes' Jeep.
The Connes spent the first night in rain, sheltering under a pile of brush. The second day, they built a lean-to, but it fell down. Heeding the advice of another mushroom picker, Michael Conne hiked uphill to try to see where they were, but returned cold, wet, and with no better idea where they were. Trying to find their way out downhill, they discovered a hollow log they could all squeeze into, and they stayed there, covering the opening with bark and hiking downhill to a creek to fill plastic bags with water. When it rained, they tried to plug the leaks with bits of wood.
"It was pretty tight in there," Dan Conne said. "I'm sure a bear would have been real comfortable in there."
They were never able to start a fire, having no matches or lighters.
"Every other time we been out there, every one of us had lighters, except this time," Dan Conne said. "Rubbing sticks together? That don't work. Slamming rocks together? Only on TV.
"There was a lot of debating, back and forth, whether to stay or go. Mikey couldn't walk. If we had to leave him, that wasn't an option. Belinda was down. I could barely walk. We just didn't know which way to go."
Searchers found a trail and a few hopeful clues along the way: a can of Pepsi, mushroom-picking buckets, a few pieces of clothing. But not the people they were searching for.
At one point, the Connes spotted a search helicopter close enough for them to see Bishop riding inside, but their attempt to signal went unseen.
After getting out of the hospital, Dan Conne picked up Jesse and the Chihuahuas, which had been cared for at the animal shelter after the rescue. Jesse jumped and danced around at seeing him again.
"I don't think we could have done it," Belinda Conne said of eating their pet. "I probably would have starved to death first."
Dan Conne said he tried to eat a hedgehog mushroom while in the forest but found it "nasty." He gave away the mushrooms he collected.
"I don't ever want to see one of these again," he said.

Buddy Streeper wins IPSSSDR third time in a row ... - - County 10

(Evanston, Wyo.) ? Blayne ?Bud? Streeper from Fort Nelson, ?British Columbia, is the winner of the 2012 International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog ?Race (IPSSSDR) with an overall time of 19:52.42. This is the fourth first-place ?IPSSSDR win for Streeper, who also won the race in 2004, 2010 and 2011. Streeper won the seventh stage of the race today by just 46 seconds over Aaron Peck. Both mushers averaged 12.6 mph in the final stage.
Peck, from Grand Prairie, Alberta, took second in Friday?s stage and in the 2012 overall race with a cumulative time of 20:09.27. A third place finisher in last year?s IPSSSDR, Peck moved up one spot.
John Stewart of Scotland and Brent Beck of Yellowknife, Northwest Territory, Canada, tied for third in Friday?s stage with identifal times of 3:19:09. But Stewart had a better overall time through seven stages to place third with a final time of 20:23.40. Stewart also raced in the IPSSSDR in 2010 and placed 9th. Beck was the race?s fourth place overall finisher.
Lander?s home town favorite IPSSSDR musher, Jerry Bath, who entered the final day with a one minute lead in fourth place, had his slowest time of the week and came in 11th in today?s stage. Bath?s time Friday was 3:41:07. He slipped three places from Thursday but finished seventh overall by completing the seven stages in 21:40:29. His final time was just four seconds over his fifth place finish time of 21:40:25 last year. Bath also finished seventh in 2010.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, the final day of race activities, Lyman hosts a Flapjack Frenzy breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. at the community?s Heritage Barn before the mushers leave for Park City. ?The 2012 IPSSSDR concludes in Park City at Quinn?s Junction Sports Complex with a Meet the Mushers event from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a Junior Mushers Race at noon. ?Select students, aged 9 to 13, from schools ?throughout Wyoming and Utah volunteered in their communities to earn the right to ?compete in the kids? race. ?At 6 p.m. the IPSSSDR Awards Banquet takes place at the Prospector, 2175 Sidewinder Drive in Park City.

Dundee was an ambassador for boxing (AP)
He saved a young Cassius Clay when he was in trouble in England, convinced Sugar Ray Leonard that he could somehow overcome the fearsome Tommy Hearns. Angelo Dundee worked thousands of corners, and had just as many stories about fighters and the games they played in the ring.
The best work of his life, though, may have been selling a sport that was often tough to sell.
"He spread good will for a sport that often doesn't have a lot of good will," said retired AP boxing writer Ed Schuyler Jr. "What he did to promote boxing is his greatest contribution to the sport."
Dundee, who died Wednesday in Tampa, Fla., at the age of 90, was a master motivator who shared the world stage with the greatest fighters of his time. But it was his 53-year relationship with The Greatest and the way they shocked the world together that will always be his legacy.
Muhammad Ali didn't need anyone to tell him how to box. He came by it so naturally that there wasn't much Dundee was going to teach him in the ring to help him become a legendary fighter.
What he needed was someone in his corner shouting motivation, someone in his corner who always had his back.
Someone like Angelo Dundee.
"There was a time you couldn't tell Ali anything, but Angelo knew how to motivate Ali," promoter Bob Arum said. "Without Angelo, Ali doesn't get out of the "Thrilla in Manila." Without Angelo I think Joe Frazier destroys him. He needed someone like that in his corner."
So did Leonard, who was taking a beating in his epic first fight with Hearns in 1981. His face was swollen by the thunderous right hands landed by Hearns and he seemed baffled when Hearns began boxing him from the outside instead of trying to slug it out as he had in the early rounds.
After the end of the 12th round, Leonard came back to his corner, exhausted.
"You're blowing it, son!" Dundee yelled at him. "You're blowing it!"
Leonard would rally in the 13th round before finally stopping Hearns in the 14th round of a fight he was trailing on all three ringside scorecards. It was a masterful performance by a great fighter, but without Dundee in his face many believe Leonard would have come up short.
"He really knew how to motivate a guy," Arum said. "He was a good trainer, but he was a great, great cornerman. He was the greatest cornerman I've ever seen."
It wasn't all just motivation, though. Dundee wasn't above resorting to a few tricks in the ring if that was what it took to help his guy win.
British fight fans still talk about the night at London's Wembley Stadium in June 1963 when their great hope, Henry Cooper, floored Ali ? who had yet to change his name from Clay ? in the final seconds of the fourth round with a devastating left hook. Dundee managed to get his fighter to the corner when the bell rang, but Ali still didn't know where he was. Thinking fast, Dundee pointed out a small split in Ali's glove to the referee, sending British boxing officials in search of new gloves and gaining enough time for Ali to recover and stop Cooper in the next round.
Cooper would later become one of Dundee's good friends. Of course, Dundee had many good friends.
"The guy didn't have an enemy in the world," said matchmaker Bruce Trampler, who went to work for Dundee in Miami in 1971. "He was everyone's best friend."
Dundee traveled the world with Ali, and in the racially charged `60s was often the only white face in an otherwise black entourage. Ali felt secure with him in his corner, though he didn't often take his advice.
He may have changed the course of boxing history in Ali's first fight against Sonny Liston in 1964 when he refused Ali's demands after the fourth round to cut off his boxing gloves and let him quit because something on Liston's gloves was causing his eyes to burn terribly. He calmed down a frantic Ali, who came back to stop Liston at the end of the sixth round and become heavyweight champion for the first time.
Dundee, though, couldn't claim credit for Ali's greatest strategic move in the ring, when he used the "rope-a-dope" to stop George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle." Though popular lore was that Dundee had the ring ropes loosened so Ali could lay against them and make Foreman tire himself out, Dundee had actually gotten the ropes tightened just before the fight began and was screaming at Ali to get off the ropes as Foreman unloaded punch after punch before finally running out of gas.
Dundee was still in relatively good health when he traveled with his son, Jimmy, to Louisville, Ky., last month for Ali's 70th birthday party. The aging fighter and his elderly trainer talked and posed for pictures, and Dundee reminisced about the past.
"I've had a lot of great fighters and a lot of great times," Dundee said then. "But the greatest time of my life was with Muhammad Ali."
Jimmy Dundee said the visit meant everything to his father, who was hospitalized with a blood clot shortly after returning home. He was later released and seemed to be recovering before having trouble breathing. He died surrounded by his children and grandchildren, a peaceful end to a life well lived.
"He had a ball. He lived his life and he had a good time," Jimmy Dundee said. "I'm so glad we went. It meant so much for him to see Muhammad again."
Dundee will be forever linked to Ali, and his death ? which followed by just a few months the passing of Frazier ? erases another link to an era long gone. Though Dundee will be remembered as Ali's trainer and cornerman, his son said he would also like him to be known as something else:
In the often brutal and cutthroat world of boxing, he stood out as an extraordinary ambassador for the sport. Anyone who met him was his friend, whether they were in his corner or across the ring.
To those who wondered why, Dundee always had the same reply:

'Jersey Shore' cast not angry with NJ city's snub (AP)
HOBOKEN, N.J. ? The women of MTV's "Jersey Shore" say they're not angry that Hoboken officials won't allow a spinoff of the reality show to be filmed in the city of Frank Sinatra's birth.
But Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley tell The Associated Press the city would have benefited from the proposed show. They say officials likely based their decision on "stereotypes" about the show and its cast.
"The thing is we don't go to a town to damage it. ... We go to a town to help it out," Farley said Wednesday. "We wanted to help out Hoboken, we wanted to give them more revenue, we wanted to give (to) their stores."
Mayor Dawn Zimmer says the local Film Commission's decision was based on safety and quality of life concerns for residents of the city along the Hudson River. Hoboken officials say 495 Productions was seeking a 24-hour filming permit to follow two "well-known reality television celebrities" who would live in the city.
The production company, which has filmed "Jersey Shore" in Seaside Heights, Miami and Italy, can appeal the decision to the city council.
Farley and Polizzi questioned Zimmer's role in the film commission's decision and said she eventually would "regret" not having the spinoff filmed in her town.
"I wish she would have met us first and maybe talked about what the show was gonna be about before just being like `You're not allowed in Hoboken.' I think that's really rude, to be honest," Polizzi said. "She was 24 once, she's from Jersey, she was at the shore and she was doing the same exact thing we're doing. She just wasn't taped."
