Itsy-bitsy structure in shape of Olympic rings created

1 hr.

What is lauded as the "smallest possible"?five-ringed structure has been created and imaged by a team of European scientists who are clearly getting excited for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

The structure ? a synthetic molecule called olympicene ? measures just 1.2 nanometers in width, which is about 100,000 times thinner than a human hair.?

The Royal Society of Chemistry?s Richard Graham dreamed up the concept while doodling in a planning meeting. "I wondered: could someone actually make it, and produce an image of the actual molecule,"?he said in a news release.

The short answer is yes.

To do so, he partnered with colleagues at the University of Warwick and IBM-Research, Zurich, who synthesized the molecule, then?imaged it?using noncontact atomic force microscopy, a technique pioneered by the computer giant in 2009.

In addition to the scientific challenge of creating and imaging the molecule in time for the Olympics, the team says the compound, which is similar to the wonder-material graphene, may have real-world applications in energy and lighting, such as solar cells and LEDs.

An Analysis of the Most Important Personal Finance Software ...

The personal finance software you put to use can have a huge effect on your financial situation. The more reliable programs permit you to manage your budget and effortlessly see precisely how much money is coming in and going out. Some programs, however, are more suitable for small businesses, others for investors and others for keeping track of your household budget. Following are some analyses of renowned personal finance software programs and suggestions for opting on one of them.

Regardless of your precise financial goals, you clearly want personal finance software that can provide you with an easier life. Of course, if you utilize it appropriately, it can do more than simply automate tasks that you?d otherwise need to calculate on your own. It can also help you to improve your financial situation by showing you exactly what?s going on. You can have immediate access to all the important numbers, for instance your expenses, income, bills, bank accounts and investments. Therefore if you spend money on a personal finance program, be sure you make full use of it so that you can get pleasure out of the benefits it has to offer. Microsoft Money Plus is one of the more eminent personal finance programs, yet they have stopped manufacturing it. It?s significant for you to recognize this, as you can still buy it from some Internet suppliers, although Microsoft will be discontinuing their support for it in early 2011. To make up for it, Microsoft will now offer a free program which is downloadable, called Money Plus Sunset Deluxe. This new program will have the ability to run on any Windows application and doesn?t entail any activation, but there are no online services or aids with it. So if you?re looking for free personal finance software with some useful features, you should try Microsoft Plus Sunset Deluxe, but if you want a program with full support you should look into one you have to pay for, such as Quicken or YNAB.

GnuCash is a free, open source tool that can be used for both personal and small business accounting. This can be an useful tool for keeping track of projects and customers for your home or small business.

You have the ability to manage a personal budget as well as having many features meant for small businesses with this program. The compatibility of this program allows you to import data from other programs like Microsoft Money and Quicken. While this program has many useful features and has the advantage of being free, it may not be suitable if you?re looking for something simple that you can use right out of the box. You will have to take some time to learn how to use the features available.

In summary, with all of the personal finance software programs on the market, you should be able to find one that?s just right for you. There are a lot of options for online and downloaded programs available. There are even a few free options as you can see. Use these tips as a guideline for locating that perfect personal finance program for you.

Building Trust In Your Web Business ? How To Do This Effectively

When you have an online business, you need to have the trust of your audience. It is important, especially if you want to be successful. Without trust, especially on the Internet, your online business will fail. You can only succeed if the trust is really there between you and your customers. And this is not just in situations where money is exchanged. An opt in list is not a viable option for people, especially if trust is simply not there. The bottom line is that if your audience does not trust you, you have to make them trust you, or else you will fail trying to build a list.

When you send an e-mail to someone that owns a website, and they don?t respond back immediately, it can be quite infuriating. This is not acceptable behavior, sometimes regardless of the reason. It is imperative that you get back with people, especially when there are customer service issues on the line. E-mails are typically sent for a variety of reasons, not just customer service issues that may arise. Maybe they want to comment about something that you wrote. Maybe they saw a post that you made and have a question about it. They will know you are real and courteous if people write in, and you answer in a fair and timely manner. The about page is very important, and it is almost comical to see the content sometimes because it is so scarce and vague. In a way, it is like personally meeting someone, but everything they are telling you is mindless and gibberish. Similar to a bone with no meat, there is absolutely no point in doing this. That is not the way to build a lot of trust for you or your business. No matter how shy you are, you should not represent yourself in such a vague way. It is simply bad business to do so. I cannot help you in this regard, even if you are concerned about your security and privacy. So you have to make this call, and also remember there are tons of female IM marketers and businesswomen who have their pictures on their sites. One thing is certain, powerful strategies employing Celtics vs Heat live stream as well as others dictate you to know the finer aspects of such tools. We do realize that is an obvious statement to many of you, but that is not the case with everybody. The thing about just starting out is you read something, and you can have the impression that is all there is. Not all marketing and advertising strategies are suitable for all businesses, and so our short intros about any one particular approach will help you to have a better sense about how applicable it is. So much of what happens in online business is the result of someone deciding to test something out and it leads to something new.

It is human nature for everyone to want to believe that what they have to say is important, and that everyone who hears it is interested. In many cases, people enjoy spouting off about themselves to whoever they can. Here?s a very simple way to expand upon this part of human nature.

People ask a direct questions on your blog. You need to reply to them. You can do this all over your blog such as asking questions in your posts or at the end of your posts. By posting bold questions and telling them to answer you, they will tell you exactly what they think every time. Guaranteed, you will start getting more replies. The proverbial ?breaking of the ice? will occur and your relationship with them will get much stronger.

When strangers trust you, it is a clear sign that you have nearly done the impossible. The skill is something very powerful and you must be responsible with it at all times. All you have to do is show goodwill and be trustworthy. If you want success, this is how it must be done.

Top 7 Niche Business Ideas: What's Working Right Now? | Niche ...

Top 7 Niche Business Ideas: What?s Working Right Now?

I love business ideas.? And even more than that, I love niche business ideas!? I of course was able to quit my full-time job over a year ago because of the niche business that I had built (of creating small keyword targeted websites).

However, since then I have both launched and observed several other niche businesses that have also been successful in their own right.? I now have a software business, WordPress plugin and theme, and as of yesterday, I also have an iPhone app business!

So, I certainly have some experience in a few different areas, but I am also aware of other niche business ideas that people are trying out?and some are quite successful.? But obviously some things that worked a couple of years ago may not be as good an opportunity today.? Overall, I want to dive into the question ? What?s working right now?

To start off, I am going to list the top 7 niche business ideas that are ?hot? right now.? These are ideas that people are talking about, trying, and overall appear to be what people are pursuing in 2012.? This by no means is an indication of what will make you most successful.? These just appear to be the ideas that people are trying most right now.? If you have a unique idea that is not listed here, even better!? The unique ideas that people are not trying can often have the most upside potential.

Now to clarify, the types of ideas on this list had to meet some very specific criteria.? I am not looking at all small business ideas as a whole.? For the most part, I am concerned with the business ideas that could be started by ONE person and could all be done online.? So, in reality these are small internet based business ideas.

So, here is a list of the top 7 Niche Business Ideas in 2012 (in no particular order):

1. Small Niche Sites

Building small niche sites is how I was able to build a nice income for myself and quit my job.? I still think this is a great business venture.? Even with all the changes that Google has made recently with the Panda and Penguin updates, there is still plenty of money to be made here.? In fact, I still have sites that I built years ago that are bringing in a nice passive income.? The idea for the business is still the same.? Find a keyword that has at least 1,000 exact match searches a month and has low competition in Google.? Build a site around that keyword and rank in Google or other search engines.? Then you can make money when visitors click your ads or buy affiliate products.

I will say that you can indeed still make money with these small niche sites, but its less ?hot? than it was a year or 2 ago.? Google is making it more difficult (but far from impossible) to rank, and there is also a lot more people building these types of sites than there used to be, so its very competitive.

2. Blogging (or ?Authority? Sites)

Blogging has been a great online business for a long time.? But guess what?? Its still a great venture!? I?ve been able to do quite well with my blog here at NichePursuits.com.? In addition, as I have mentioned a couple of times recently, I am in the process of building a large ?authority site? (just a big blog really) outside of the internet marketing niche that I hope to build into a viable business over the next year.? (I actually wrote a 15 page guide sharing the exact strategy and plans I will be using to build this branded site, I discuss how you can get it here).

Essentially, the idea is to build a large brand or at least a site that is looked to as a destination location in your niche.? Rather than relying solely on search engine traffic, the idea is to build up and audience that will keep coming back for your take on whatever subject you are covering.? Now search engine traffic is still a big part of this, and you will still want to target lots of long tail keywords in your posts, but this is very different from small niche sites that essentially target 1 keyword.

If you are passionate about a particular subject, then blogging could be a great way to go!? The potential to earn a six figure income is definitely there as many others have shown already. You can make money from advertising, affiliate marketing, creating your own products, or doing joint ventures.

3. iPhone Apps

With the popularity of the iPhone and Android phones over the past few years, mobile phone apps as a business is a very real possibility.? Many entrepreneurs have hit it big with iPhone apps already.? In fact, I?ve interviewed a couple of them recently on my podcast: Benny Hsu and Pat Flynn (and I have one more coming this week!).? And of course, I have been documenting my process of building my own iPhone app for the past several months right here on my blog.

The draw of this business is that for a couple of thousand dollars (sometimes) you can completely outsource the creation of your app.? All you do is come up with the idea, hire a developer, and manage the entire process.? The reality is that more and more people are using mobile phones and so the market is a fast growing one.? Yes, its a competitive marketplace, but there is still plenty of room for original ideas and useful apps.

I plan on working on additional iPhone apps in the future because I think there is a lot of potential here.

4. Kindle eBooks

This is a business that is growing in ?hotness? right now.? I?ve personally never published a Kindle ebook, but apparently its very easy to do and making money here has a huge passive income potential.

When I first heard about publishing Kindle ebooks, I thought people were trying to write best-sellers and essentially becoming a full-time author.? But after doing some research, I found that some people are essentially treating this opportunity like small niche sites in a way.? Essentially, they are finding a niche topic to write about ? usually in the non-fiction category.? This could be anything from cooking, gardening, or a how-to guide.

But essentially they write a short (often less than 50 pages) book, effectively title the book, and then upload it to Amazon.? People find the book by doing searches right on Amazon and their book shows up that targets the niche topic extremely well.? Kindle ebooks are usually priced in the $0.99 to $4.99 range, so each sale won?t bring in very much, but the idea to have lots of books.? If you can have a dozen books that each make 5 or 10 sales a day, then it really starts to add up.

Anyway, I haven?t tried this, but from the chatter going on, its a pretty hot business right now.? I don?t know if people are actually making very much money doing this (some claim to be), but its certainly an idea that lots of people are trying right now.

5. Software development

Developing a niche piece of software may seem daunting, but the reality is that you can outsource the programming portion of it.? I own Long Tail Pro, but I?m not a programmer.? This piece of software has done very well for me, so I would be leaving out a great business idea that I am personally familiar with if I didn?t mention software development.

The great part about owning a software business is that the return on investment can be very high.? If you are able to come up with a small piece of software, you can often have it outsourced and developed for only a couple thousand dollars (bigger ideas can cost much much more of course).? Once its developed, you can sell the product over and over again ? there is no marginal cost for selling an additional unit ? its essentially all profit.

So, if you can think of a niche market that might be able to use a simple piece of software, don?t let the fact that you are not a programmer scare you off!? You might have the opportunity at a great business.

6. Information products

People selling eBooks or other information products on the internet has become so popular, that their is even a name for it: infopreneur. I have to admit that some of the people selling ebooks or other information products in the internet marketing space can be pretty shady.? Many of them rightfully get a bad rap.? However, there is also A LOT of great products out there that are nothing more than an ebook, video recording, or audio recording.? Many millionaires have been made from selling information products.

Of course if you have an existing audience perhaps through your own blog or authority site, then selling an info-product will be much easier, but it can also be done in other ways.? You can form a joint venture with someone with an audience, pay to email someone?s list, or pay for advertising.

Even if you are not an expert in your field, you can create an information product by interviewing experts, paying experts to write content for you, or in many other ways.? These expert interviews or other information can be combined into a series of podcasts, video tutorials, an online membership site, or basic ebook.? Lots of different formats exist in which you can sell information, but the key is to provide true value and find a willing audience.

7. Freelance Services

This may be less passive in nature, but doing freelance work can be a great way to bring money in the door.? You can offer your freelance services by writing (article writer, ghost writer, copywriter), programming, design work, proof-reading and editing, Fiverr gigs, and much more.

With the advent of freelance sites such as Elance.com and Odesk.com, you can often find work doing some sort of unique task that can perhaps be your first official business.? Sure, you are still trading time for money essentially, but it might be better than having a full-time boss!

So there you have it, 7 great niche business ideas to choose from.? Some of these are clearly working better than others right now, and maybe they are not all for you.? However, perhaps reading through some of these sparked an idea that you can then take and create something completely original on your own.

Are there other niche business ideas that are working well for you right now that I didn?t mention?? If so, I would love to hear about them?let me know!? I look forward to reading any comments or questions that you have below.

New semYOU Cloud Office Offers 15 Enterprise Apps for Business ...

LOS ANGELES, May 29, 2012 ? Cloud computing is the IT trend du jour, and the term has spawned a variety of definitions and promises from different ?experts.? With its new version of the semYOU Cloud Office (www.semyou.com), scheduled to be launched in late May, app computing system semYOU is taking users beyond the hype by offering businesses a comprehensive, flexible cloud-based enterprise office system based on software-as-a-service.

Now businesses that need software for human resources, project, task, scheduling management and more can gain access to required applications by simply pointing and clicking. The new semYOU Cloud Office is a complete software infrastructure for small or large companies that want to be flexible, are working globally and collaborate with different partners worldwide.

?In less than three minutes, a business can make the whole software infrastructure of semYou available for individual users, teams, projects or the whole company, complete with an administration suite for managing users, groups, rights and licenses, security as well as customization,? said Volker Jahns, CEO of semYOU LLC.

The system provides users with 15 enterprise apps such as Task-Manager, Project-Manager, Project-Timer-Recording and more that all users in the Cloud Office may use. The array of applications makes it possible for IT departments to deploy a full software suite for ongoing projects via the cloud without having to change software infrastructure or increase costs.

?The big advantage of implementing a virtual office via semYOU Cloud Office is that you have the ability to be flexible and scalable for each new situation in your business,? said Jahns. ?Instead of your being stuck with a rigid system architecture that?s dedicated to specific applications, the new enterprise app idea from semYOU is to enable you to use professional apps for each business case, just when you need them.?

An additional benefit is that users do not have to deal with software installations, downloads or any other changes to their computers.

The semYou enterprise app system is designed as a low-cost model, and businesses can create virtual offices for their teams starting at $15 user/month for a minimum duration of one month. That means if 10 individuals use the system?s applications, the business pays $150 for that month, and users are not restricted to the same app.

?With semYOU, the cloud finally gets a face,? stated Jahns. ?We?re demonstrating how the Internet will look tomorrow for business.?

Showing dogs motivates woman fighting cancer | FOX6Now.com ...

Posted on: 8:11 pm, May 27, 2012, by Jeremy Ross, updated on: 08:41pm, May 27, 2012

WAUKESHA ? One woman?s love of dogs has spanned more than 30 years, but recently, a deadly disease has threatened that passion, and the woman?s life.

Sandy Rolling?s disposition mirrors the gentleness of the golden retrievers she?s grown to love. Over a year ago, Rolling showed off her own canines in events like the AKC Badger Golden Retriever Club Dog Show held at the Waukesha County Expo Center.

Now, running around the ring, showing her dogs, is no longer an option.

Rolling was diagnosed in 2001 with lung cancer.

?I was cleared after four years, and then, this last year, I had a pinch in my hip. I thought I just twisted it, but my cancer had just metastasized to my hip,? Rolling said.

The disease and surgery took most of the mobility from Rolling?s right food. Chemotherapy took all of her hair, but it?s growing back, as is her will to compete and show her dogs in the ring.

?It keeps you going. It?s a goal ? to get back. This is where my family away from my family is, and all my friends are here and they?re great,? Rolling said.

Those who know Rolling say she?s an inspiration. ?Maybe she has a disease that?s bad, but she teaches us all how to live,? one friend said.

Since FOX6 News last spoke with Rolling, she says a PET Scan has shown a re-occurence of cancer in four places.

Rolling will undergo more chemotherapy at the end of the month.

Rolling?s friends continue to volunteer to groom and run with Rolling?s dogs in the ring until she gets back to full health.

Beginning a Charlotte Mason Education (Or How to Begin Your ...

Inquiries

Angel, a beautiful young mom, very pregnant with their second child, caught me after class to ask me about homeschooling.? I started gushing about Charlotte Mason. Their first child, a five year old, is one of the delights of our church. His joy in life and his easy ability to make friends with any age always puts a smile on my face.

The Wonderful Aiden

Another Sunday brought me similar inquires from Jodi, a mom of three lively preschoolers, and my own daughter, Samantha, the mother of our beautiful grandchildren and I are in a long standing discussion of the pros and cons of homeschooling vs. public schooling vs. private schooling.? We do agree on following, as closely as possible, the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason.

?

?My Granddaughter Zoe

This article is an attempt to provide a reference point for those searching for information on this educational journey and to a path that leads to a wonderful way of life.

Directions

?It may be that the souls of all children are waiting for the call of knowledge to awaken them to delightful living.?? This quote from the preface of the last published book of Mason, ?Towards a Philosophy of Education,? summarizes, I believe, the passion behind her never ending fight to offer children the best and brightest of educations.? It is the touchstone of the new vision of Childlight USA.

Children are born persons is a CM distinctive.

1925 Edition of ?Towards A Philosophy of Education?

This is the first point in the twenty-item summary of her teachings, now printed in each of her six-volume works, that she originally titled, ?A Short Synopsis of the Educational Philosophy Advanced in This Volume.?? ??Today, an Internet search of ?Charlotte Mason?s Twenty Principles? will lead to the original language and to modern paraphrases.? This is an excellent place to begin. Think of it as the starting line at a Marathon Race.

After reading a summary of Mason?s writings, I would advise the following journeys

1. Attend a conference or retreat, if possible.

2. Books to read:

Mason?s Six-Volume Set:

Home Education

Parents and Children

School Education

Ourselves

Formation of Character

Towards a Philosophy of Education

Susan Schaeffer Macaulay?s For the Children?s Sake:

This is the book that introduced me to Mason, and to say it changed my life is an understatement. I share this book on an ongoing basis when anyone asks me for educational help. ?I recently purchased it as an audio book and listened to it again. It had been seventeen years since I had originally read it.? It is still fresh and true.

3. Charlotte Mason Schools

If you are lucky enough to live near a CM school, you are lucky enough.? These bastions of knowledge offer shared wisdom and structured application of Mason?s directives.

4. Charlotte Mason Cooperatives

These also offer opportunities to practice the wisdom outlined in her books. Many times this is simply a group of parents who band together once or twice a week to share living books, nature study and other ingredients imperative in an authentic CM education.

I have lead a group of high school students this year in a Friday group called ?The Gathering? and we have studied Shakespeare, Poetry, Current Events, and have taken numerous field trips exploring our Alabama heritage. We usually met in coffee shops around Birmingham.

?Current Events at The Gathering

5. Reading Groups

If all this reading and planning sounds overwhelming, start or join a once-a-month reading group, with dessert and coffee, to work through one of the volumes.?? The joy of shared discovery and friendships adds depth and value to the journey.

Do you have other resources that have helped you?? Please share them on the comments section.

Blessings and Peace,

10 Most Overused R?sum? Phrases - resume cover letter portfolio

Throughout your career, you?ve accomplished many feats, exceeded several goals and mastered countless skills. Now you?re on yet another job hunt and you can?t remember a lick of any of it.

Such is the importance of keeping your r?sum? up-to-date, whether you?re looking for a job or not. When you don?t, not only will you forget the important details that?ll help your r?sum? stand out to employers, but in your rush to submit your application on time you?ll end up using the same words and phrases as everyone else ? ruining your chances altogether.

Career experts always advise job seekers to avoid common r?sum? mistakes, but one grave error often left out of the mix is the overuse of clich?s and vague phrases ? and perhaps it?s the worst gaffe to commit.

?If a job seeker places overused phrases on his or her r?sum?, the chances of standing out from other candidates are greatly diminished,? says Kathy Sweeney, a certified professional r?sum? writer. ?A r?sum? is a marketing tool and should be utilized to distinguish the candidate from other people vying for the same position.?

Details, details
From first glance at a candidate?s r?sum?, employers want to see career progression: concrete accomplishments, any gaps in employment and potential growth within the employer?s company, says Sally Stetson, co-founder and principal with Salveson Stetson Group, an executive search firm. Because employers want to see significant accomplishments, rather than lists of job duties, job seekers must provide solid illustrations of their talent.

?Providing specific examples may allow a potential employer to relate the applicant?s work experience to potential business needs within their company,? Stetson says. ?These examples will also demonstrate a business and results orientation.?

Keywords
When employers search for candidates in their databases, it?s based on ?exclusion? rather than ?inclusion,? Sweeney says. In other words, employers look for keywords as a way to narrow the applicants down the 10 or 20 most-qualified candidates. These chosen few are left standing only after others are weeded out.

But what some candidates think constitute keywords and phrases are actually vague generalities that show up on the majority of r?sum?s.

?Keywords are not ?team player? or ?good communication skills,?? Sweeney says. ?If an employer searched for those phrases, they would receive about 1,000 r?sum?s that would be considered ?relevant? to their search parameters.? Instead, keywords are solid functions like, ?sales,? ?marketing? or ?business development,? she says.

Here are 10 clich?s Sweeney and Stetson see job seekers overuse on their r?sum?s and how to rephrase each one into a strong example of your talent.

Clich? No. 1: ?Strong communication, customer service and organizational skills.?

Let Kathy rephrase that: Possess strong communication, customer service and organizational skills, which increased customer satisfaction from 85% to 98% and realized 100% on-time delivery of assigned projects.*
?

Clich? No. 2: ?Introduced new products.?

Let Kathy rephrase that: Developed, introduced and launched successful new products, which increased market share 3% and contributed $3 million to bottom-line profitability.*
?

Clich? No. 3: ?Track record of success.?

Let Sally rephrase that: Consistently surpassed sales goal by 10% or more each year.*
?

Clich? No. 4: ?Possess leadership, communication, motivational and inspirational skills.?

Let Kathy rephrase that: Highly-effective leadership, communication, motivational and inspirational skills, which led to 98% employee retention ratio and four out of six employees promoted into management positions.*
?

Clich? No. 5: ?Exceeded all productivity goals for the department.?

Let Kathy rephrase that: Exceeded established department productivity goals 16% through development / implementation of best practices to increase employee output, communication of corporate objectives and introduction of compensation plans to reward high-performing individuals.
?

Clich? No. 6: ?Go-to person.?

Let Sally rephrase that: Selected by CEO for special customer service assignment that improved customer retention by 14%.*
?

Clich? No. 7: ?Team player.?

Let Kathy rephrase that: Possess strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise and follow leadership directives at appropriate times.
?

Clich? No. 8: ?Served as company spokesperson.?

Let Kathy rephrase that: Served as highly-successful company spokesperson, which generated positive media relations, resulted in identification as an industry expert, and garnered coverage in business / industry publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Investor?s Business Daily and PC World.**
Clich? No. 9: ?Partner with others.?

Let Sally rephrase that: Collaborated with key members of the finance and information technology departments to develop and implement a new sales tracking tool.
?

Clich? No. 10: ?Spoke with existing customers on a daily basis.?

Heard in more states: See you in tax court!

(Reuters) - Georgia State Representative Allen Peake owns 20 restaurants and this year he took his frustrations with his tax bills to the state capitol, where he helped push through legislation creating a new state tax court.

"I've had several sales tax audits done and disputed them, and never felt I had a fair shake," said Peake, echoing the views of other business owners.

Before Peake's bill passed, Georgia taxpayers challenging state tax authorities had to pay disputed taxes before appealing them. Their appeals would be heard by the same Department of Revenue that levied the tax in the first place. And further appeals could be overruled by the revenue commissioner or heard by a judge without tax expertise.

Under the new system, tax appeals will be heard by a tax expert who is independent of Georgia's Department of Revenue, and taxpayers will not have to pay disputed taxes before appeal.

Six U.S. states have established or considered establishing independent tax tribunals in the last two years, a trend supported by the business community, but one which also is stirring debate about the need for these new tribunals.

In addition to Georgia, Illinois approved a law last year to create a tax court by 2013.

In Alabama, Governor Robert Bentley announced Thursday that he will pocket veto legislation that would create a new state tax tribunal, due to flaws in the bill, but will support its reintroduction in the next legislative session.

Eighteen other states have well-established tax courts, and another nine states and the District of Columbia offer independent tax courts or forums that do not have to be staffed by tax experts.

Twenty-one states, including Alabama, do not have independent tax courts at all, among them are three of the largest states - California, Texas and Florida.

CRITICS SEE MORE COMPLEXITY

Some critics say independent tax tribunals layer costs and complexity onto systems that already are slow and cumbersome, helping tax lawyers perhaps more than their clients.

States set them up nonetheless, in part because the systems make them appear friendlier to business at a time of high unemployment and interstate rivalry for jobs.

"How you're treated as a taxpayer does impact your perception of the business climate," said Douglas Lindholm, president of the Council on State Taxation (COST), a group of large companies that is a driving force for state tax courts.

"In the fiscal downturn, states are becoming more cognizant of this, as they should," he said.

Of the 18 established state tax courts or tribunals, four have been created since 2003 - in West Virginia, Alaska, Kansas and Mississippi. Counterparts in Oregon, Wyoming, New Hampshire, New York and Indiana date to the 1990s and 1980s. Another nine have been around for more than 30 years.

Their structures vary from state to state, but generally these tribunals offer a place where taxpayers can challenge the decisions of tax authorities, from individual and corporate income taxes to sales and property taxes.

States without an independent court generally rely on administrative hearing systems within their revenue departments to adjudicate tax disputes, like the one Georgia had. Unhappy taxpayers in these systems often may appeal to state courts, but these lack specialized tax judges.

Proponents of the new tax courts include lawyers' groups and corporations. They say the courts handle appeals more quickly and in ways that are fairer to taxpayers than when the appeals are under the control of state revenue departments.

COST, Lindholm's group, publishes a scorecard every few years grading state tax administrations, including whether a state has an independent forum staffed by tax experts. Georgia's grade in the latest survey, done before the new court was created, was a C minus. That should now improve.

But that kind of grading is misguided, say critics, who argue that the new courts are expensive and unnecessary.

"We are in a terrible budget crunch, and this just creates another level of bureaucracy and another thing to fund," said David Stout, a spokesman for the Alabama Education Association, which represents school employees and has opposed creating a tax court in that state.

STATE COURTS MORE OPEN

Like the U.S. Tax Court for federal taxes in Washington, D.C., the state courts allow taxpayers to appeal tax assessments. Unlike the U.S. Tax Court, state courts often make their hearings and records public, sometimes including taxpayers' tax returns.

State income tax collections from corporations have fallen in recent years, but state taxes have also become more complex, said Michael Mazerov, a state tax expert at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington fiscal policy think tank.

Corporate tax departments are spending more time dealing with state taxes, which makes businesses more interested in expert appeals reviews, said Bruce Ely, an Alabama tax lawyer and long-time proponent of forming a tax court in that state.

In Alabama, tax appeal cases rose to 1,135 in 2009 from 387 in 1995, according to state records.

State tax cases are not restricted to small, local firms. Several Trump casino properties are appealing their Atlantic City property tax assessments in New Jersey tax court. Online travel group Expedia has brought a case in the Hawaii Tax Court that is expected to go to trial in October.

Companies also increasingly push similar litigation strategies in multiple states at once, raising the complexity of cases state judges must decide, state tax court experts said.

Individuals as well as businesses can use the tax courts, and some of the courts, including Georgia's new one, provide for expedited, less-expensive "small claims" divisions.

That is not enough to satisfy critics, however, who say the tax courts are not needed and administrative tax reviews serve taxpayers well. They cite figures showing taxpayers win more often than they lose these appeals, even when there is no specialized court.

The Illinois Department of Revenue, which has traditionally heard tax appeals itself, was one of the opponents of that state's new court.

Department spokeswoman Susan Hofer said a tax court will make appeals more time-consuming and costlier since taxpayers will have to hire lawyers. She said the present administrative review system collects $30 million in delinquent taxes each year for the state, something an independent judge may be less concerned about expediting.

What exactly is FOREX?

Foreign exchange stands for this currency exchange market, which can be a major international financial market exactly where stock markets are usually traded. This currency exchange market commenced in the 70s and it is now the most significant fiscal market place on the globe, with an regular everyday return associated with US$1.Being unfaithful billion. That is certainly twenty five times the volume of every day action upon all of the People stock markets.

Instead the idea runs using the foundation referred to as interbank marketplace or Over the actual Counter-top (Non-prescription). As each Foreign exchange trade entails 2 reciprocal investments (purchase one currency exchange and then sell on an additional), these are performed digitally along with virtually any dealer who?s prepared to accept the business.

This means that they can trade $100,000 blocks, furnished his or her account consists of at the very least $100,1000 by 1% = $1000. One thousand dollars can safeguard your dealer in opposition to any probable deficits that their client can make (foreign currency values rarely go up and down by simply a lot more than 1% within a morning). If your buyer?s accounts can be reduced through losses (i.electronic. lowering the broker?s protection under appropriate ranges), the particular dealer can close all investments and also demand one more put in prior to even more deals can be produced.

The higher the influence proportion, small buying and selling change which will be needed to wipe out the exchanging cash. Consequently find the quantity of control that you use prudently.
For brand spanking new investors, it might be advisable to commence with control involving 20:1 as well as 60:One particular. This will likely raise the volume you need to open up a free account, but it may lessen the likelihood of experiencing your investing capital vanish as a result of modest transfer of value of a forex.

Iran, big powers agree to meet again over nuclear dispute

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iran and world powers agreed to meet again in Moscow next month for more talks to try to end the long-running dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme, but there was scant progress to resolve the main sticking points between the two sides.

At the heart of the dispute is Iran's insistence that it has the right to enrich uranium and that economic sanctions should be lifted before it stops activities that could lead to its achieving the capability to make nuclear weapons.

Western powers insist Tehran must first shut down enrichment activities before sanctions can be eased.

But both sides have powerful reasons not to abandon diplomacy. The powers want to avert the danger of a new Middle East war raised by Israeli threats to bomb Iran, while Tehran also wants to avoid a looming Western ban on its oil exports.

After discussions in Baghdad extended late into an unscheduled second day between envoys from Iran and the six powers, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said it was clear both sides wanted progress and had some common ground, but significant differences remained.

"We will maintain intensive contacts with our Iranian counterparts to prepare a further meeting in Moscow," she told a news conference in Baghdad.

Ashton leads the negotiations for the six-country group made up of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - which together with Germany is known as the P5+1.

The next meeting, the third in the latest round of talks that began in Istanbul last month, will be held in Moscow on June 18-19.

Ashton said the six powers wanted practical steps from Iran to address concerns over its nuclear work.

Chief among such concerns is Iran's ability to enrich uranium to a fissile purity of 20 percent. That is the nuclear advance most worrying to the West since it hurdles technical obstacles to reaching 90 percent, or bomb-grade, enrichment.

"Iran declared its readiness to address the issue of 20 percent enrichment and came with its own five point plan, including their assertion that we recognize their right to enrichment," Ashton added.

IRAN INSISTS ON ITS RIGHTS

Iran says it will not exceed 20 percent and the material will be made into fuel for a research reactor.

"Talks were intensive and long," said Iranian chief negotiator Saeed Jalili. "They were detailed, but are left unfinished."

"The atmosphere of these talks was positive for the two sides to talk about their issues in a clear way. We believe the result of these talks was that we were able to get to know each other's views better and more."

But enriching uranium, he said, was "an undeniable right of the Iranian nation".

Iran has hinted at flexibility on higher-grade enrichment but Iranian media said it would not give away its most potent bargaining chip without significant concessions on sanctions.

Jalili denied the P5+1 had offered a new package of proposals during the meeting: "They proposed one suggestion about the issue of uranium enrichment. We have said that any cooperation (in this area) would depend on the preservation of Iran's right to enrich uranium."

While there was little if any concrete progress, the fact that the two sides agreed to continue talks was a sign of progress in itself, after more than a year of not meeting at all before the latest round of negotiations began in April.

"The two sides' commitment to diplomacy in the absence of any clear agreement is a positive sign," said Ali Vaez, Iran expert at the International Crisis Group think-tank.

"All parties should be commended for returning to the negotiating table. Obama should be commended for having turned diplomacy into a process rather than the one-off meetings that existed in the past," wrote Trita Parsi, President of the Washington-based National Iranian American Council.

"Both sides entered negotiations with their maximalist positions, and neither budged," he said. "Looking ahead, now the hard work begins."

The United States and its allies suspect Tehran is trying to develop a nuclear weapons capability and have imposed tough sanctions on Iran's energy and financial sectors to try to force it to compromise and open up its activities to scrutiny.

EU states are set to introduce a total embargo of Iranian crude oil purchases in July. Diplomats say that potentially persuasive measure will not be cancelled unless Tehran takes substantial steps to curb its nuclear activities.

WORRIES ABOUT WAR

The powers want Iran to send its stockpile of more highly refined uranium abroad and close an underground plant devoted to 20 percent enrichment and largely invulnerable to air strikes.

In return, the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany have offered fuel to keep Iran's medical isotope reactor running, assistance in nuclear safety and an end to an embargo on spare parts for Iran's ageing civilian aircraft.

Rising tension over the past year has pushed global oil prices upwards as the West has broadened sanctions to bar Iran's crude exports and the specter of Middle East war has increased with the threat of possible Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear installations.

Israel is believed to be the only Middle East country with nuclear weapons but regards Iran's nuclear aspirations as a mortal threat given its calls for the demise of the Jewish state.

Iran, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, says it is enriching uranium only in order to generate electricity to serve the needs of a burgeoning population, and for a medical research reactor.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly ruled out suspending all enrichment as called for by several U.N. Security Council resolutions, saying nuclear energy is a matter of national sovereignty and pride in technological progress.

Geeks rejoice at Google's legal triumph over Oracle

Google couldn't have asked for better in its intellectual property dispute with Oracle. The judge turned out to be a programmer, and his ongoing guidance to the jury tempered deliberations. Then there were a couple of lucky breaks, the biggest perhaps from former Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz, who volunteered on the witness stand the company saw no grounds to sue Google. Wherever the luck, and perhaps a tenable defense, Google won big today with the jury finding that Android doesn't violate Oracle patents acquired from Sun.

The reaction, as measured by Google+ posts, is magnanimous for the search giant -- and, well, as for Oracle it's best not to whack the beaten too much more. I chose to take reaction from Google+ because it's such a techie hangout.

Had Oracle triumphed today's patent warfare could easily have become a nuclear nightmare. There's legitimate argument that a win for Google is a win for all those developers without the patent portfolios of the likes of Apple and Microsoft. Still, that scenario is possible. The judge could rule APIs are copyrightable, so Oracle may yet walk away with an industry-swaying ruling.

Perhaps those gleeful about the verdict are more vocal, since I found more of this kind of reaction. "Oracle probably shat themselves when it was revealed that their presiding judge is a programmer", Chris Droste opines.

Linux creator Linus Torvalds:

Prediction: instead of Oracle coming out and admitting they were morons about their idiotic suit against Android, they'll come out posturing and talk about how they'll be vindicated, and pay lawyers to take it to the next level of idiocy. Sometimes I really wish I wasn't always right. It's a curse, I tell you.

Tech blogger Ishaan Garg: "A just verdict :)"

"I'm quite surprised by the verdict being totally dismissive of Oracle claims, as Google somewhat took lightly some pieces of Oracle / Sun IP (albeit definitely not on the scale that Oracle claimed), but I guess that we developers?and not only !?can all rejoice about this!" writes software developer Yannis Bres.

Software engineer, and ex-Googler, Cedric Beust calls the verdict: "Fantastic news!"

"Oracle you should have known it would come to this", student Candyce Moore writes. I mean, how much money did you want from Google again? 75 Trillion something like that? Which is, you know, more money than actually exists in the world".

Applications program manager Brett Freeman: "Shocker. Anyone feeling sorry for [Oracle CEO] Larry Ellison? Didn't think so. At least attorneys made $$$".

"Patent suits aren't events any more, they're a new fact of life, possibly even a new standard operating corporate strategy", help desk tech Frank Lazar writes. "Isn't that why Google's buying Motorola??"

PC World writer Katherine Noyes: "Wahoo!" Mohamed Rafiq believes that "Oracle got what they deserved and meanwhile in the process lost some friends".

"Google should give some pocket change -- $100 m-- to Oracle so that they can save face and 'settle'", systems biologist Tau-Mu Yi suggests. "These trials make me nervous. Google should have reached some type of licensing agreement with Sun back in the day".?

Computer tech Brian Booher: "VICTORY!!! Now sit down and shut up Oracle!" "Congrats on the win today in court", writes student Jose Rodriguez.

"I'm actually kind of shocked by this one", Brian McClure expresses. "Not because I think Google infringed but rather that the jury had enough understanding and common sense to see through Oracle's lame arguments".

Red Hat evangelist Jan Wildeboer: "Getting myself a bottle of Augustiner Helles. And relax, knowing another babystep towards a better world just occured in the Oracle v Google case".
