Wichita church and radio station offer free gas

WICHITA, Kansas?? With gas prices around $3.75 a gallon, it's becoming harder and harder for Kansans to fill up their tanks. But thanks to a Wichita church and radio station, hundreds got a little help Saturday to ease the pain at the pump.

The line stretched as far as the eye could see at the gas station near 13th and Oliver. There was so much traffic, Wichita Police were called in to help direct drivers.

"Yeah, it was worth it," said Jason Henry, one of 250 drivers who waited up to two hours to pump free gas.

Kingdom Harvest Church and Power 93.9 teamed up for the gas giveaway. It's their way of helping Kansans struggling to make ends meet during difficult economic times.

"It helps a lot," said Henry. "Things have been rough at work, hours are down, and it just helps getting food on the table."

A total of $5,000 worth of gas was given away in an hour. With a $20 limit, the outreach project helped 250 Kansans drive away with smiles on their faces.

"It's awesome to see people giving back to the community," said Henry. "With everything that's going on, it's awesome to see people giving back."

AAA reports the national average for unleaded is now $3.92 a gallon. That's up 33 cents in a year. Many analysts expect that average to peak as high as $4.25 per gallon.
