Gay marriage: About time or unnatural? | Atlanta Forward

Today, a same-sex marriage proponent calls gay marriage the new normal. An opponent? says such unions erode the country?s moral fabric.

Let us know what you think with comments below. Moderator Rick Badie leads the discussion.

Lift marriage barrier for same-sex couples

By Matt Hennie

There?s a ?new normal? brewing across the country, yet it embraces values that have stood the test of time: equality and freedom.

That ?new normal? is what Gallup calls the acceptance of same-sex couples that they find is growing. A recent Gallup poll shows that 54 percent of Americans agree that gay and lesbian relationships are ?morally acceptable.? Even more say same-sex couple relationships should be legal.

Package that with the endorsement delivered earlier this month by President Barack Obama and it?s clear the tide is shifting in favor of marriage equality.

Acceptance is coming to Georgia, too, though at a much slower pace. A recent Landmark Communications/Rosetta Stone poll for WSB-TV shows 59 percent of Georgians are opposed to gay marriage, a number that has shrunk since nearly three-quarters of voters in 2004 approved adding a same-sex marriage ban to the state Constitution. It?s still substantial and a sentiment that is shared across the South.

But what the current polls don?t show is that Atlanta is packed with same-sex couples and ranks among the top five in large cities across the U.S. for same-sex households. It?s the same across metro Atlanta and the rest of Georgia. Same-sex couples live in the mountains, along the coast and in the southwest corner of the state, too. And these couples, just like their heterosexual neighbors, are in loving and committed relationships, promising to care for one another for better and for worse.

Unlike their neighbors, though, they can?t share their marriage vows with one another and legally show they cherish their partner in the same way their straight neighbors do. Don?t be lured into embracing the fears manufactured by opponents of same-sex marriage. They want to distract you from the Golden Rule, twist its meaning and convince you that what poll after poll shows ? more Americans support same-sex marriage than oppose it ? is wrong. It?s not.

Don?t be fooled into thinking that same-sex marriage is about rights or that because I may want to marry my partner some day means your marriage needs to be redefined. Plain and simple, this is about respecting the tradition of marriage, its importance in society and allowing gay couples to join the institution, not change it.

I respect the honor and tradition that comes with marriage; it worked for my parents, and I want the chance to have it work for me.

Gay couples share the ideals that marriage is a heavy responsibility and comes with a lifetime commitment and we want to express that to our partner. Gay marriage is not a game. It?s not a political strategy and it shouldn?t be used as a weapon to beat down the love I have for my partner.

Matt Hennie is founder of Project Q Atlanta, an online media source that reports on gay and lesbian issues in metro Atlanta.

Marriage: One man, one woman

By Ray Newman

After President Barack Obama?s endorsement of same-sex marriage, I was interviewed by several media outlets. Each interviewer wanted to know my first reaction. I said, ?I was not surprised.?
The simple truth is anyone who had been paying attention to the culture and signals from this White House would have known the direction in which it was headed. Vice President Joe Biden had indicated his support for same-sex marriage, saying he had changed his opinion after having watched a sitcom on television. I further stated that I was saddened by the endorsement.
Following the president?s announcement, many people began to second-guess its timing. It would be interesting to know why the Wednesday before the national observance of Mother?s Day would be picked as the day of the president?s endorsement. It is also interesting that following the vote on Tuesday in North Carolina, in support of a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman, the next day would be set as the day of the president?s endorsement.
There are now more than 30 states that have passed amendments or initiatives defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Thirteen states, including Georgia, voted in 2004 to add the definition to their constitution.
We come to this issue from several perspectives. First, the historic social issue of marriage. Traditionally, each culture for centuries has accepted marriage as a union between one man and one woman. In fact, the first definition of marriage given in the dictionary is: ?The social institution under which a man and woman live as husband and wife by legal or religious commitments.?
We see the Judeo-Christian moral foundation as a major building block of societies and cultures. The Judeo-Christian moral foundation of our nation has served as the major building block of our nation. The marriage ceremony indicates before witnesses that a man and woman are joined in a covenant intimate relationship.
Finally, we look at this issue from a political viewpoint. We are watching as morals are moving away in order to assure rights. We are being told that, politically, we must evolve into an amoral world view in order to assure rights that are granted to certain behaviors.
I am saddened we have come to the place in our nation where cultural changes are now impacting behavior more than the traditional building blocks that have served us well throughout history. I affirm my position in support of the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
The foundation upon which our nation is built must remain strong or we will see the nation fall into ruin.

Images show more NKorean work at nuclear test site

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea has ramped up work at its nuclear test site, according to an analysis of satellite images released Tuesday, a day after a senior U.S. envoy warned the North that an atomic test would unify the world in seeking swift, tough punishment.

Glyn Davies' comments after meetings Monday in Seoul with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts reflect widespread worry that North Korea may follow a failed April 13 long-range rocket test with its third nuclear test. Both of its previous nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009, followed rocket launches.

North Korea, meanwhile, shot back in a statement Tuesday, saying it will keep developing its nuclear program if the United States continues to "stifle" the country.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman made no direct threat of a nuclear test, but said North Korea feels compelled to strengthen its "nuclear deterrent" in the face of U.S. hostility. However, the spokesman also said North Korea is open to dialogue to resolve the standoff.

Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea professor at Seoul's Dongguk University, said the North's message is that "the U.S. should come to the dialogue table (with North Korea) if it wants to stop its nuclear test."

Late Tuesday, Davies told reporters in Beijing, where he is meeting with Chinese counterparts to discuss the North Korean nuclear situation, that he hadn't had a chance to study the North's latest statement but that his initial sense was that it was consistent with what it has said in the past.

"I don't know that it adds or detracts from what we already know about the North Korean view about what's happening," said Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea.

Satellite images taken by DigitalGlobe and GeoEye in the past month show heightened activity at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Korea's northeast, including mining carts, excavation equipment and a large amount of debris taken from inside a tunnel and piled around its entrance, James Hardy, IHS Jane's Asia-Pacific specialist, said in a statement Tuesday. The most recent image was from May 9.

South Korean intelligence officials said last month that satellite images showed North Korea was digging a new tunnel in what appeared to be preparation for another nuclear test at the site. A new tunnel is likely needed because existing ones probably caved in and became contaminated with radioactive material after previous tests.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who took power in December following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, has vowed to place top priority on his impoverished country's military.

"It is very important that North Korea not miscalculate again and engage in any future provocation," Davies told reporters earlier at the South Korean Foreign Ministry. "If they make the right choices, there can be a different future for North Korea."

Another nuclear test, however, would result in "swift and sure" punishment at the U.N. Security Council, he said.

North Korea announced its planned rocket launch just two weeks after it had struck a food aid-for-nuclear freeze deal with Washington ? the result of months of tedious, back-and-forth negotiations that was seen as something of a breakthrough at the time.

The decision sent a "signal that they can't be trusted to follow through on their own undertakings and their own promises," Davies said.

"Words are no longer, quite frankly, interesting to us. What we want to see is actions from North Korea," Davies said.

Washington and other nations called the April rocket launch a cover for a test of missile technology that could be used to attack the United States ? and therefore a violation of the U.S.-North Korea deal. North Korea said the rocket, which broke into pieces over the Yellow Sea shortly after liftoff, was meant to send an observational satellite into orbit.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry comments were in response to an earlier statement by the Group of Eight that warned the North that it faces more sanctions if it continues to threaten the stability of the region with provocative acts such as rocket launches.

"If the U.S. persists in its moves to ratchet up sanctions and pressure upon us despite our peace-loving efforts, we will be left with no option but to take countermeasures for self-defense," the North's statement said.

Stocks rally further in run-up to EU summit

MOSCOW (AP) ? Global stocks advanced Tuesday ahead of a summit of European leaders that's expected to be dominated by calls to boost economic growth across the continent, though ongoing worries over the upcoming Greek election kept the rally in check.

Europe remains the focus of attention across all financial markets in the run-up to the June 17 Greek election that could go a long way to determining the country's membership of the euro as well as the future of the single currency zone.

On Wednesday, the leaders of the 27 European Union countries will hold an informal meeting in Brussels. The summit is expected to focus on ways to kick start the region's faltering economy.

"There have been lots of comments from various officials regarding the wish of the EU for Greece to remain in the eurozone, the need to agree upon a growth agenda to go alongside the austerity agenda and of course on common euro bonds," said Gary Jenkins, managing director of Swordfish Research.

With that backdrop, stocks have recovered this week after a parlous few sessions.

In Europe, France's CAC-40 was 1.3 percent higher at 3,065.82, while Germany's DAX rose 1.2 percent to 6,404.32. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 1.2 percent at 5,367.43, helped by figures showing that the annual inflation rate dropped to 3 percent in April, its lowest level since February 2010. The International Monetary Fund, however, issued a tough assessment of U.K. economic policy on Tuesday, urging authorities to do more to boost demand in the economy.

In Greece, political uncertainty and a gloomy prediction by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development pushed shares on the Athens Stock Exchange to their lowest level in 22 years on Tuesday, 1.8 percent down at 534.55.

Wall Street had a mixed opening after Monday's solid advance. The Dow Jones industrial average was slightly down ? 0.16 percent ? at 12,470, while S&P 500 added 0.6 percent at 1,324.79.

Europe's debt crisis as well as developments in Greece has the potential to knock the rebound in sentiment witnessed so far this week.

"Markets are by no means out of the woods, however, and much uncertainty will remain ahead of Greece'e election in just less than a month," said Mitul Kotecha, head of global strategy at Credit Agricole CIB.

If a new government fails to follow through with an austerity plan agreed to by prior Greek leadership, the country could lose a promised multibillion euro bailout from international lenders. Greece's default could send shockwaves throughout Europe. The OECD's top economist warned on Tuesday that the 17-country eurozone risks falling into a "severe recession" and called on governments and Europe's central bank to act quickly to stop the slowdown spilling over into the global economy.

The organization now forecasts a longer and deeper contraction in the eurozone than in its November report, with the eurozone economy expected to shrink in 2012, and only manage a feeble recovery in 2013.

Earlier, Asian markets posted sizeable gains. Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.1 percent to close 8,729.29 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.6 percent to 19,039.15. South Korea's Kospi climbed 1.6 percent to 1,828.69.

Hopes that China will announce new measures to boost growth also helped push shares higher. Investors were encouraged by weekend statements from Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who promised to spur the world's second-largest economy, a shift from previous rhetoric about curbing inflation.

In the oil markets, benchmark oil for June delivery was down 50 cents to $92.36 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.09 to settle at $92.57 in New York on Monday.

In currencies, the euro slipped to $1.2770 from $1.2793 late Monday in New York. The euro hit a four-month low against the dollar last Thursday. The dollar was up at 79.60 yen from 79.36 yen.

PerDM Validate Best Practice as Method for Maintaining Quality ...

CHESTER, ENGLAND, May 20, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- PerDM have learnt many businesses either intentionally or sometimes unintentionally ignore the practice of regulating and documenting business processes, often due to time constraints, which leads to inconsistency in the services provided. PerDM confirm that using Best Practice techniques has led to the continued high quality of leads generated for their growing client base and has enhanced the way they manage individual client relationships, simply from applying proven good practice across all account management functions.

A Global provider of field marketing and outsourced sales services, PerDM believe it critical to have business strategies that are transferable to any new market or economy.

The concept of best practice has been employed extensively in the field sales and marketing industry. 'Ensuring there is a procedure to follow that can be employed in any city, in a time efficient and effective manner is important to us. Maintaining quality sales acquisition for our clients is certainly a priority and utilising Best Practice methods has proven to be successful in sustaining that quality' says Ian Attwood, Director at PerDM.

Forbes reported last year that Networking should be considered a Business Best Practice. Today 33,000 Rotary Clubs exist based on a networking principle founded by Businessman Paul Harris in 1905. Harris' formula has contributed to the success of some of the world's most influential business relationships. 'Networking is a Best Practice method as it allows a benchmark to be set. Identifying and monitoring other businesses processes is particularly significant during a recession. Understanding how successful a business is in comparison to others in the same field will assist in the economical survival of that business' adds PerDM's Ian Attwood.

PerDM modify their Best Practice model through benchmarking. Measuring their business strategies against market leaders allows PerDM to apply the appropriate standards to their business while setting objectives to improve any area that allows for development. These processes allow the field marketing agency to respond quickly to innovation and become more efficient while still generating high quality leads. Businesses that ensure Best Practice attract and retain a higher calibre of personnel.

PerDM continue to apply Best Practice methods and employ performance management tools to constantly ensure productive focus on what are effective but sustainable growth plan.
